New England Equine Rescues

... equines needing homes.

NEER was started in '05 when I saw a need to network all the people interested in helping horses.  I saw that rescues weren't talking to each other, and didn't have the time to solicit all that they needed from the many that are happy to help. I don't have the land to save them all, and my husband won't let me spend the retirement money.  So instead, I started the NEER board and got my friends involved, it has grown into 600+ members since then, and we have done a great deal to help many horses, with the help of everybody that we can find.

I personally live in coastal RI, but the NEER peeps are all over New England, including those below, who are both the NEER core, and fosters for NEER.

Thanks to everybody who has helped, we have really made a difference... (:

Welcome to www.RIDART.org – the team's on-line home!

The Rhode Island Disaster Animal Response Team (RIDART) is a public/private/volunteer partnership to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies affecting animals in Rhode Island. Those animals include large and small domestic animals as well as wildlife. The emergencies they could face range from storms or floods to fires and oil spills.

The team is composed of volunteers who work under the direction of the RI State Veterinarian. Training – free to team members – emphasizes safe handling of animals, pet first aid, effective rescuing, sheltering, and reuniting pets with their owners. The team helps assure that Rhode Islanders are as ready as possible to make the best of bad situations.

It's amazing when one is faced with a life-changing event, that they set aside the time and resources to finally stop and smell the roses.  For me it was to full fill my life-long dream of owning my own horse.  It was early 2006 when I found and joined NEER, and saw my Danny Boy up for adoption.  My husband was on a business trip, and when he called that night I gave him the good news that I had adopted a rescue horse!   Danny is an amazing horse, he has taught me so much about myself, and what it takes to own a horse.  It was a challenge at first (he is a TB after all), but now it seems like we've been together for years..  Danny absolutely LOVES children. A friend from church stopped by with some of her young granddaughters who ogled and loved all over Danny.  He just stood there, head lowered, soaking it all up.  I wouldn't be able to do any of this without the help of my beloved husband Dennis who "was" a non-horse husband, but now loves Danny so very much.  I'll look out the window sometimes to see him grooming Danny and talking softly to him, even sneaking in a hug every now and then.  Danny and I enjoyed only a few trail rides before his arthritis became too bad, now I know what "head-bobbing lame" means.  He recovered very nicely, and now gallops around the paddock.  I drool, longing to be able to just hop on and go for one heck of a ride!  I wish I had the time, resources, health and space to adopt many more rescued horses, to give them a second chance at life, to help them learn that there are many humans who love them.  I am very thankful for all of my horse friends who helped the new horse mom, offered ideas, support and advice.
